Netflix is losing ground against its rival streaming services fast, and now it seems it will be giving up its forthcoming movie, Monkey Man, which is expected to receive a theatrical release with Universal Pictures.
According to the received updates, the Dev Patel starrer “Monkey Man” with the lack of Netflix involvement, faced multiple delays on Netflix. Initially slated for release in Netflix’s 2022 list, that movie was later yanked from the lineup. A year later, in 2023, the Netflix list of 2023 slated releases didn’t include Monkey Man. Meanwhile, Halle Berry’s The Mothership faced a similar delay in the streaming platform; however, later it was reported that the series was entirely scrapped.
Previously acquired by Netflix in 2021 for a reported $30 million, it was filmed for four months, from December 2020 and January 2021.
Now, according to a media source, Universal Pictures is looking forward to sweeping in and snapping up the Dev Patel starrer film. Notably, after facing several delays, the film has already wrapped filming and has been snapped for a theatrical release on April 5, 2024, and is slated to release under Jordan Peele’s banner, Monkey Productions.
Monkey Man, directed and features Dev Patel, stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sikander Kher in the lead roles.
Meanwhile, the synopsis for the film, Monkey Man, reads,
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meagre living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.”Although the exact reason for the shift is unknown, the streaming platform, Netflix, continues to lose some of its popular shows and films. According to a report published by THR, “Insiders say Peele had a chance to see the movie, and was so taken with Patel’s vision that he believed it deserved a theatrical release.”
