The Watcher is an American thriller drama. It was created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan and premiered on Netflix on October 13, 2022. The series bears similarities to an article written by Reeves Weideman in 2018 for New York magazine’s website, The Cut. The series features Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as Nora and Dean Brannock. The couple started receiving creepy letters from a stalker calling himself The Watcher.

The true story behind this thriller drama originated in 2014, when Derek and Maria Broaddus moved to Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, along with their three children. This family was targeted by The Watcher, a stalker who sent them creepy letters. It was first published in 2018 in a New York magazine article. However, series creator Ryan Murphy has added many creative elements of his own to the series, including changing the names of family members in an attempt to protect their privacy.

What is ‘The Watcher’ About?

The real-life couple moved to 657 Boulevard and thought of it as their dream home. The renovation started on the property, and they started receiving creepy letters addressed to ‘The New Owner’ as soon as it began. The sender, who called himself The Watcher, sent the first letter, “657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now, and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s, and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time. Do you know the history of the house? Do you know what lies within the walls of 657 Boulevard? Why are you here? I will find out.”

The letter also talked about children in the family and referred to them as young blood. “You have children. I have seen them. So far, I think there are three that I have counted,” it stated. The police told the Broaddus couple not to discuss it when they reported it, as the stalker could be one of them. The last episode of the series ends with the storyline that even after selling 657 Boulevard, Dean Brannock is still in search of The Watcher.
